Training and Support
Training
The Society recognizes the importance and benefits of training for new and experienced foster parents. Each applicant to foster care must participate in the presentation of “Parent Resource for Information, Development and Education”, otherwise known as PRIDE. It is a practice model and curriculum designed to strengthen the quality of family-based care by providing a competency based framework with supporting caregivers and adoptive parents.
Additional workshops and courses are offered to enhance the knowledge of foster families and expand their parenting skills.
Support
Parenting abused and neglected children and youth in care if often quite challenging. Each foster family is assigned a resource worker and has access to the Society 24 hours a day. Experienced foster parents are assigned to each foster home to offer peer support. Our Foster Parent Association meets monthly, providing additional support and networking opportunities.
Financial Assistance
Foster families receive a daily non-taxable reimbursement for children and youth residing in their home to cover the cost of food, shelter and other living expenses. As well, there are clothing and recreational allowances which vary according to the age of the child. Health and dental coverage is provided by the Children's Aid Society.
